On my way to work yesterday, I sat behind this car at a particularly long red light.
I’m certain that both the “dog is my copilot” bumper sticker and its counterpart elicited little more than an eye roll from me. In fact, I’ve never seen a Christian bumper sticker (regardless of theological correctness) I’d ever consider actually putting on my car. Mostly because I’d hate for my witness to be compromised by the way I drive, but also because there’s something childish and arrogant about bumper stickers that just doesn’t jive with being salt and light.
But it was the second sticker that really caught my attention. It had this Sinclair Lewis quote printed on a plain white background:
“When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.”
I can’t pretend to understand what kind of political statements this person is intending to make by quoting Mr. Lewis. Like most of my fellow Americans, I’m blissfully ignorant of the vast majority of what’s happening in the political arena. But to the driver, I can say this: what happened to you? What Christian so greatly profaned the name of Christ in your eyes that would inspire in you enough hatred (or spite, at the very least) to stamp something like that on the back of your Subaru?
Brothers and sisters in Christ, given the world’s general attitude toward us, I think it’s safe to say we’ve failed.
Now, how can we fix it?
