On Curls

Anyone with naturally curly hair knows it’s both a blessing and a curse.

Allow me to share with you a product I’ve found recently that helps make my curly hair more blessing than curse.

A few years ago, I switched to totally sulfate free hair products. I noticed a HUGE difference in the health of my hair, as did my hair stylist.

Since making that switch, I decided to learn more about The Curly Girl Method. (It’s kind of involved, so I won’t explain it here. Check out the book if you want to know more.) And in doing so, was challenged to try removing shampoo from my routine and “wash” my hair with conditioner instead. I learned that having the right conditioner is truly crucial for this to actually work. Thus began my love/hate relationship with the Harmonic system from Intelligent Nutrients.

I looooved the results (look at that curl definition!!) and the smell was downright heavenly, but these products have a few major drawbacks in my book. First of all, they’re entirely made from plants and flowers and thus had this nasty habit of attracting BEES. (No joke. Ask anyone who attended a cookout with me this summer.) I also had to use a TON of the conditioner to feel like my hair was actually getting clean and also leaving a little in for extra hydration meant I was going through it really quickly. The hold in the gel and styling cream really didn’t impress me either. Not to mention, after going through middle school in the late 90’s, I HATE gel. HATE IT! The final nail in the coffin? I just couldn’t afford it. A big bottle of the conditioner retails for $48. I also needed to use the styling gel ($32) and the curly hair serum ($32) to get a workable style. And those bottles didn’t last nearly as long as one would hope at that price point.

So I set out in search of another option.

And man did I find it!! At Sephora. Of course.

Living Proof Curl Conditioning Wash and Curl Defining Styling Cream are my hair’s new best friends.

They’re formulated without sulfates, silicones, parabens, and other yucky chemicals that are the enemies of all curly hair. I love the Conditioning Wash so much. I don’t have to use very much of it and my hair actually feels both clean AND healthy after using it. And the Curl Cream provides both hydration, smoothing, and hold that feels and looks really natural and doesn’t leave a lot of build up.

In case you didn’t believe me about the hold– this is me, first thing in the morning, straight out of bed. You can see the product is still supporting and defining my curls rather than leaving my hair looking more like a completely ratty bird’s nest. (Curly girls know exactly what I mean.)

The best thing? If you pick this product up at Sephora and figure out you don’t like it, YOU CAN RETURN IT! Truly. They have the world’s best return policy. Not to mention their Beauty Insider loyalty program winds up giving you soooo much free product and makes you privy to special sales and events that are so much fun.

Are you a curly girl? What are your favorite tips and tricks?
